NOAA Researchers Survey Mid-Atlantic Ridge
An international team of researchers is surveying the Mid-Atlantic Ridge halfway between Iceland and the Azores to determine its biodiversity and search for new species and clues to deep-sea food webs. The project is part of a 16-nation effort to determine if the underwater mountain chain in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean has its own distinct animal communities. Led by NOAA researcher Mike Vecchione of the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC), headquartered in Woods Hole, Mass.
Marport Awarded AUV Contract
Marport, a subsea acoustics technology company, announced that that it has been awarded a contract valued at over $870,000 to supply its SQX-1 AUV to an international geodetic survey company. The AUV employs a propulsion and control system based on thrust vectoring, developed to make it passively stable in pitch and roll. The vehicle will be equipped with Marport’s Software Defined Sonar platform, which will include sensors, sounders and imaging sonar.
Aldbrougth Gas Storage Facility Commences Operation
StatoilHydro and Scottish and Southern Energy have begun commercial operations at the Aldbrough gas storage facility in East Yorkshire, UK. Aldbrough will provide around 60 million cubic meters (mcm) of capacity in two caverns until the end of 2010, when another three caverns are expected to become available. MMT Buys TSS 440 Cable Tracker
Swedish survey company MMT AB has purchased a TSS 440 pipe and cable tracker from Teledyne TSS Ltd. The new TSS 440 will be used to identify the routes of the numerous cables that cross the region. Marketing manager for MMT, Olof Nilsson, explained that extensive installation of submarine cables on the bed of the Baltic Sea over the past century has now made it important for the company to invest in its own cable tracker.
Ireland Launches New ROV
The Mobile & Marine Robotics Research Center at the University of Limerick performed trials and demonstrations of their new Remotely Operated Vehicle, ROVLATIS, at Limerick Dock. This underwater robot has been developed for ocean exploration and commercial operations in inshore waters and as far as the edge of the continental shelf at depths of over 1,000 m. At a cost of over $1.4 million, the submersible is the first of its kind designed, built and tested in Ireland.
