Cavitation is defined as the sudden formation and collapse of vacuum voids or bubbles in liquids. The CaviBlasterTM system consists of an engine or motor driving a pump that propels water through a proprietary nozzle. As the water exits the nozzle, the pressure drops and the water begins to vaporize. As the jet velocity drops or when it hits an obstacle the voids (bubbles) implode due to increased pressure. The collapsing bubbles release energy and produce ultrasound, creating a distinctive noise. The force generated by the energy released during implosion of the cavitation bubbles creates small-scale shock waves that tear foreign material off of the surface to be cleaned. Different CaviBlasterTM systems utilize different nozzle designs to achieve various levels of aggressiveness in the cleaning stream. Nozzles operating at lower pressure are designed specifically not to damage paints, ablative or anti-fouling coatings, or soft or fragile surfaces. Examples of objects cleaned with the lower pressure nozzles include fiberglass boat hulls, fish farm or aquaculture netting, and pressure or sonar transducers. Nozzles operating at relatively higher pressures are designed to remove paint or other coatings for applications requiring inspection of bare metal surfaces. The most important benefit of the technology is that the water flow exits the CaviBlasterTM nozzle as a cloud of vapor-like cavitation bubbles instead of a high-pressure water jet.
