NOC: New National Center Covering Marine Science

by Greg Trauthwein

A new, national research organization, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean, working in partnership with the UK marine research community, goes live April 1, 2010.
The National Oceanography Center (NOC) will be wholly owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), and will be formed by bringing together the NERC-managed activity at Liverpool’s Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory and the National Oceanography Center. A central goal of NERC’s strategy is the creation of more integrated research communities to tackle today’s pressing environmental challenges.
A major element of the new approach will see the NOC develop a strategic network of partners and associates, at universities and research institutes, working collaboratively with the center in its support of research, tech development and training of scientists for the future.
