Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and RIEDC Executive Director Keith Stokes to Celebrate Opening of the Leading Ocean Technology Event in North America to be Held in Newport

U.S. Navy Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead to
Attend 2011 Ocean Tech Expo

WHAT: As the home of an extensive defense, advanced manufacturing and marine trades industry, Rhode Island is host to the premier interactive ocean technology event in North America.

Governor Lincoln D. Chafee and Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Keith Stokes are scheduled to welcome national and international participants to the 2011 Ocean Tech Expo (OTE) in Newport.

U.S. Navy Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Gary Roughead will accept the “Seamaster of the Year Award” from the Marine Technology Reporter at a special reception in his honor at the Expo.

From defense, to robotics, transportation, communications and public utilities, the OTE has become a leading forum for collaboration between a wide range of industries and businesses involved in technology-driven, marine-related fields. Participants will have an opportunity to listen to and interact with key decision makers and thought leaders in the defense and ocean technology industry on various topics including:

• The Expanding Role of Environmental Measurement Systems in the Marine Marketplace

• Future Defense and Maritime Security Initiatives

• Emerging Requirements for Application of Underwater Vehicles and Robotics for Ocean Exploration


The event is organized by New Wave Media, publisher of international marine technology trade journals and sponsored by the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador – Canada and the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).

WHO: Governor Lincoln D. Chafee is scheduled to appear on Tuesday, May 17 at 9 a.m. to tour the booths, cut the ribbon and provide welcome remarks. RIEDC Executive Director Keith Stokes will join Governor Chafee at that time.

Keynote Speaker, Ned Farquhar – Mr. Farquhar is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land & Minerals Management at the U.S. Interior Department (Thursday, May 19 at 9:30 a.m.)
