Red Penguin Receives Contract for Wave Hub

Image: Wave Hub Wave Hub Limited has awarded a contract for the marine operational management and electrical engineering services in order to ensure a safe and efficient facility, Wave Hub. Red Penguin Associates Limited was chosen for this contract on January 11, 2012, thus it is most likely that the company will sub-contract electrical engineering services.

Wave Hub is a novel system that provides the electrical infrastructure to support developers of wave energy converter devices (WEC’s). Wave Hub allows developers to test WEC arrays over several years in a fully monitored marine environment and export their generated electricity to the local grid, via the Western Power Distribution (WPD) substation at Hayle on the north coast of Cornwall.

The development consists of 25 km of armored subsea cable from the shore to a subsea termination hub. WEC’s will be connected via subsea cables from the hub tails. The main 25 km of subsea cable is protected and stabilized along its route. The substation includes a transformer, switch gear and control and monitoring facilities. There are currently no WEC’s deployed within the Wave Hub site. There is a dedicated office in the center of Hayle which allows some command and control functionality.
