Lighthouse Retrofits Cabled Ocean Observatory

Lighthouse R & D Enterprises, Inc. is mobilized to undertake a complete retrofit of its second cabled ocean observatory – the Lighthouse Ocean Research Initiative (LORI II) – located in the Arabian Sea. The crew embarked aboard the SD Northern River from the Port of Sharjah, UAE, on October 23rd.
The prototype cutting-edge, 4000-m-rated fiber-optic-cabled system measures physical oceanographic properties throughout the water column to the north, east, and south of Ras al Hadd. The region is environmentally sensitive as several endangered species of sea turtles inhabit the local waters. The LORI II system went live in January 2010 and replaced an autonomous mooring system that had collected data in the region since 2005. The three existing, 2500-m-long cabled moorings will be temporarily replaced by new autonomous arrays, allowing for the continuation of the seven-year time-series data record. A complete examination of the recovered system and additional research and development will lead to a less expensive and more reliable 4000-m-rated cabled design.
